"Play" - Nov. 21 - End of Semester
Please check out the new installation exhibit, “Play” by USD art student, Ashley Lemon.  It’s at the top of the stairs on the west side. Now until the end of the semester.

Play
“Play” is a table built to promote not only ‘play’ but also stress relief in the form of creation for adults. In a gallery the viewer is not supposed to touch the art; however, touch is a sense that we all used while growing up to learn about and understand different things. As a child we touch, we play, and we create with no worries, however as an adult many people lose the child like whims of touch, play and creation to jobs, bills, and many worries. “Play” was built in the hopes that when a viewer approaches it, they can escape the worries of an average adult and be pulled back to a time when the important part of the day was doing something that would make you smile.

University Libraries at USD presents juried altered book exhibit 'Bound and Unbound II'

VERMILLION, S.D. -- University Libraries are exhibiting a unique collection of altered books at the University of South Dakota with “Bound and Unbound II: Altered Book Exhibition,” now through Friday, Dec. 20.
“The University Libraries are honored to exhibit the works of artists from South America, Europe and the United States in Bound and Unbound II: Altered Book Exhibition,” stated Dan Daily, dean of University Libraries. “The exhibit offers students, faculty and the public an opportunity to engage with the printed book as an object that expresses the artists’ creativity, intellect, and imagination.”
Altered books are a mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form, altering works that have been manipulated through various processes like cutting, painting, tearing and collage. Final pieces in the exhibition are featured in a display on the second floor of University Libraries and showcase 45 pieces from 32 artists from Argentina, Canada, England, Hungary, Spain and the United States. The juror for the exhibition is Karen Bondarchuk, foundation area coordinator and associate professor at the Frostic School of Art, Western Michigan University.
“The University Libraries Art and Exhibits Committee organized the first altered book exhibition in 2009 and we had such an overwhelming response and interest, we decided to open up ‘Bound and Unbound II’ not only nationally but internationally,” said Sarah A. Hanson, Digitization and Photographs Archives and Special Collections, University Libraries. “We plan to make Bound and Unbound a biennial event.”
“Bound and Unbound II: Altered Book Exhibition” is photographed and cataloged, and has been placed in the Digital Library of South Dakota at http://bit.ly/un-bound. The exhibition is also open to the public during library operating hours (www.usd.edu/library/hours.cfm). More information is also available on the Web at www.usd.edu/library. A photo of Spanish artist Amparo B. Wieden’s “El juego” is available for download at www.usd.edu/press/news/images/releases/BoundUnbound_II.jpg.

Call for Art Makers - Friday March 22nd

Visit libguides.usd.edu/make-art to register by March 20.

About the 2-Part Art Experience:
A visual art-making event open to student, faculty and community art makers, in which artists are given 7 hours to make an artwork, from start to finish, followed later by an exhibition showcasing the products of this event. The purpose of the event is to challenge artists to work within a tight deadline and to expose library visitors to the process of creativity. Event participants and visitors will get the opportunity to engage in conversations about the processes of creativity and visual art making, current cultural topics and other stimulating discussions. Event spectators and exhibition visitors will develop a deeper understanding of Libraries’ commitment to diverse academic and artistic pursuits, as well as facilitating execution of cultural community events. In order to broaden patrons’ understanding and appreciation of the University Libraries’ mission, this exhibit would strengthen participants’ knowledge of Libraries’ support of their intellectual research.
