USD is an OCLC Express Library

 

Congratulations to the I.D. Weeks Interlibrary Loan Staff on maintaining the exceptional ILL service required for OCLC’s Express digital delivery program! As you know, the Express program connects high-performing libraries committed to delivering digital resources within 18 hours. With Express, our goal is to provide value to your library through innovation and help you to provide great service to your library’s users.

Since Express started in January, more than 105,000 copy requests have been created and filled among Express participants. And in April, Express participants filled copy requests in an average turnaround time of 10.2 hours.

 The Express program enables digital resource sharing among a select group of libraries using the WorldShare ILL network that have turnaround times for lending digital materials of 18 hours or less. More than 1,000 libraries from around the world are actively participating in Express based on their ability to deliver articles and other digital resources within this timeframe.

Exhibit - The Story of the Coyote: A Visual History of USD Athletics

 The Story of the Coyote: A Visual History of USD Athletics was curated by Leah Dusterhoft, BFA Fine Arts – Graphic Design ’21 as part of an art history independent study course taught by Art History Professor Dr. Lauren Freese. Dusterhoft is a USD Student-athlete, throwing the discus for the track and field team during her time at USD. Since the fall of 2019, she has worked as a graphic design intern for the Sports Information Department, making graphics for social media. 

The exhibit will be on display in the 2nd Floor Gallery from April 28- Aug. 6

The Children's Blizzard of 1888: The Advent of Communicating Meteorology

The Wortmann family of Crofton, Nebraska wanted to express its gratitude to USD Libraries for assistance and resources. It was announced this week that Sophia Wortmann and Rylie Arens won first place in the Nebraska National History Day contest for their Junior Group Performance Project entitled "The Children's Blizzard of 1888: The Advent of Communicating Meteorology." This project was created in no small part with materials and oral histories from USD. This is the second time in three years that a member of the Wortman family has won first place for Nebraska's contest using, in no small part, USD materials. On to the national competition!

Library Renovations - 2nd and 3rd Floor

Many of you have noticed that the upper floors of the library have changed a lot over the past few months. This is especially noticeable on 2nd Floor where almost a quarter of the 3rd Floor collection had to be moved downstairs. Starting May 10th, an extensive series of renovations will be beginning across the library. Normally we would do book shifting, shelf building, etc. during the summer to minimize disruption, but due to the timeline, we have had to work through the Spring semester.

Part of this project has included the relocation of about half a dozen tables on 2nd Floor. Their locations - and much of the furniture arrangements - are temporary and part of a larger project that will include updated seating and study options on both 2nd and 3rd Floor. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes as we head into Finals and ask for your understanding as we work to meet renovation deadlines.

Vanguard: Leading on Voting Rights, Leading the Nation

 The University of South Dakota Libraries are proud to be a sponsor for the upcoming lecture “Vanguard: Leading on Voting Rights, Leading the Nation” by Professor Martha S. Jones, who is the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor and Professor of History at The Johns Hopkins University. The presentation is a joint Schell History Lecture and Gunderson Lecture in honor of Women’s History Month. It is scheduled for March 18 from 4 to 5 p.m. via Zoom. USD Libraries, Archives & Special Collections, and the South Dakota Oral History Center all house numerous collections and research materials on women’s suffrage. The SDOHC has about a dozen oral histories that discuss the topic. Several are currently featured on the SDOHC Kiosk on the second floor of I.D. Weeks Library, and many can be accessed at the Digital Library of South Dakota (https://explore.digitalsd.org/ ).  

Also in the DLSD is the Marnie Shields Pyle Papers.  This collection is part of the Richardson Collection, USD Archives & Special Collections. Mamie Shields Pyle was a prominent suffragist and leader of the South Dakota Universal Franchise League which secured suffrage to South Dakota women in 1918. She is the mother of Gladys Pyle, the first female senator from South Dakota. Have You Considered?

Have you considered using oral histories as sources for your paper or project? The South Dakota Oral History Center (SDOHC) contains stories from throughout South Dakota and its peoples—including Black Americans who have lived and worked in South Dakota.

The Black History oral histories at the SDOHC are comprised of thirty-four oral histories (about two-thirds have transcripts), virtually all of which were recorded in the 1970s. A little over one-third of the interviews are with Black women. Many of the interviews focus on the Civil Rights Movement in South Dakota during the 1960s, particularly in Sioux Falls and the Black Hills, but also other large towns  such as Yankton and Huron. Other topics include experiences of Black settlers, veterans, laborers, churches, as well as race relations.

"Patrons may read transcripts and listen to any audio files that we have here in the SDOHC, including those that do not have signed releases. We just cannot make copies of items that don't have copyright releases. So that's why we just encourage patrons to make an appointment to come visit us in person if they can and if they're interested in something that we find that does not have a copyright release,” Sam Herley, SDOHC Curator, explained.

The I.D Weeks and Wegner Libraries both updated their classrooms

 

I.D. Weeks Library active learning classroom. New “Chevron Verb” tables were added. New TV mounts, and an Apple TV are coming. Right now, everything is socially distanced; note the chairs stacked at the front of the room.

New Signage

USD Sanford School of Medicine faculty and students will use the new Wegner Library classroom for lectures and collaborative learning.   

Wegner Library Renovation

In 2018, the Wegner Library Board of Directors approved a substantial renovation of the Wegner Library. Features of the renovation include:

• A new classroom: The Mary D. Nettleman M.D., M.S., M.A.C.P. classroom will provide USD Sanford School of Medicine faculty and students with a large classroom for both lectures and collaborative learning. The classroom will serve as a study or event space when not in use for classes.
• Traditional and contemporary study areas throughout the building, which include new furniture.
• A welcoming and user-friendly information and research help desk.
• Lockers available for checkout
• A treadmill desk

The open, light, and inviting character of the building was retained while replacing the book stacks with a classroom and introducing a vestibule that will soften the sound of students entering and exiting the library for classes. The renovation includes high-density mobile stacks that are located in the basement of the Health Sciences Center. High-use items and collections will remain in the library. The library’s permanent collection of books and journals in storage are available to students and faculty upon request.

ART 100 FYE Altered Book Exhibit

 On display now until the end of the semester in the second floor cases in the library.

Students in the ART 100 FYE class created an altered book for exhibit. The class goal was to transform a discarded book into a creative artwork that encompassed a theme and utilized a variety of media and techniques.  

I.D. Weeks will be open Feb. 16

Feb. 16, 2021, the library will be open normal hours (7:30 a.m.-Midnight).  Circulation, Interlibrary Loan and Archives & Special Collections will be open. All other areas of the library will be closed.
