Library Voices

Whether working at a service desk, or behind the scenes on a project, student workers help keep the library running smoothly to make sure users can take advantage of the libraries’ varied resources and services. We greatly appreciate our undergraduate and graduate student workers and have asked a few of them to share what working at the library means to them. Enjoy their responses below!

 

My meaning here at the library is to create more accessible forms of various archives to allow for everyone to enjoy.
 

Being given the opportunity to grow my knowledge and appreciation for the numerous resources available for students at the University of South Dakota is my favorite thing about my job here at the library.
 

My most recent projects have been creating online access to former Honors Thesis as well as creating more accessible transcripts for archived articles over the history of the Dakota's for the Digital Library of South Dakota.

Working in the library means helping spread our words. Here at the library, we have so many different resources that students may not be aware of, and I am happy to help bring the recognition it deserves.
 

My favorite part about working in the library is the atmosphere. There is nothing more comforting then being surrounded by all the knowledge that we are.  The noise level is perfect as well 🙂.
 

My projects mainly bring awareness to what we do at the library, resources we have, and honoring accomplishments.

I enjoy working at the library because last year I never spent any time there but working at the ILL has helped me to know my way around the place, which makes me feel comfortable there. I also like that I know how to navigate the shelves to find journals and books. I would have never known how to do that if I weren’t given this opportunity. I feel important when I’m at work!

 ProQuest will be taking up to an eight-hour maintenance window beginning Saturday, January 15 at 9:00pm to preform upgrades on many ProQuest products. During this maintenance window, the following products will be temporarily unavailable.

Water will be shut off in I.D. Weeks building will be shut off on Dec. 20 from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm

The plumbers need to shut all water off to the building to repair a section of broken pipe.  All water will need to be shut off for a period of approximately 4 hours to complete the repair.

Vitural Reference - Dec. 16 - Jan. 7

 Virtual Reference will be available Dec. 16- Jan. 7 Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Normal reference hours will resume January 10th, 2022.

Trial - Electronic Resources - Visible Body

The Libraries will be trialing Visible Body until Dec. 31, 2021

Visible Body has a library of over 24,000 visual assets, including full male and female 3D gross anatomy models, microanatomy models, moving muscle action models, physiology animations, pathology visualizations, illustrations, and cadaver images paired with CT or MRI scans. Visible Biology includes 3D models, interactive simulations, and animations that explain key introductory biology concepts. Students can learn even more with the included definitions, pronunciations, and learning presentations that use this visual content.

University Libraries Open Access repository - RED

RED (Research, Engage, Design) https://red.library.usd.edu/ is an open access digital repository for the collection, management, preservation, and dissemination of intellectual works produced at the University of South Dakota. It is designed to contain scholarly and creative works by faculty, staff, students and institutional partners, and can include journal articles, working papers, technical documents, images, audio and video, datasets, theses and dissertations, problem reports, honors projects, capstone projects, and open access textbooks.

RED can also be used to host journals, publish digital projects, organize and archive conferences and events, and share special collections. It uses Digital Commons software, powered by bepress.

RED is a service of the University Libraries.

Open Access Week - October 25-31

Celebrate Open Access Week October 25-31

The goal of Open Access is to digitally publish scholarly work making it easily accessible and free to use responsibly by the public. Authors retain control of the integrity of their work and the right to be properly cited and acknowledged. This way of publishing scholarly works looks to supplement or in some cases replace the current pay-for-access journals that limit access through price and permission barriers. Open Access hopes to restore the original intent of scholarly publication by removing these barriers and getting scholarly work seen and used by the most people possible.  

Why open access?

Promotes faster transmission of ideas, and builds research infrastructure  
Increases visibility and citation counts for authors
Eliminates inequities in access to knowledge
Gives taxpayers access to publicly-funded research
