We are extending our hours the week before finals starting on Nov. 30.  

Friday (11/30) 7:30 am - 2 am*
Saturday - Sunday (12/1-2) 8 am - 2 am*
Monday - Friday (12/3-12/7) 7:30 am - 2 am*
Saturday - Sunday (12/8-9) 8 am - 2 am*
Monday - Tuesday (12/10-11) 7:30 - 2 am*

Wednesday (12/12) 7:30 am - 8 pm.

Winter hours begin on Thursday, Dec. 13.  

Thanksgiving weekend reference

The reference desk will be closed Nov. 22 - 24.     We will have electronic reference Sunday, Nov. 25  2 - 9 pm.   http://libanswers.usd.edu/

Access issue with ScienceDirect

 Access to ScienceDirect is currently showing this screen before article access.  

Selecting the first option will deny you access.   Second choice is the correct one.

If you selected the first option, you will need to delete your cookies for Elsevier and ScienceDirect and choose the second option - University of South Dakota Lommen Library, UnivSouthDakotaIP

We are working with ScienceDirect to remove this option screen.

RESOLVED - Psychiatry Online

This issue has been resolved as of Oct. 26, 2018 - Psychiatry Online is currently unavailable to patrons accessing it through the proxy. Access is available on the library computers. Please do not enter your email in the error page.  We believe the website might be hacked. 
We are working to resolve this issue and apologize for the inconvenience.

Ebook Central maintenance

Ebook Central will be down for maintenance for approximately 90 minutes beginning at 11 am on Saturday, October 27.   Ebook Central will be unavailable during this time.

Survey results will help the I.D. Weeks Library set priorities to improve library services and collections to support your learning, teaching, and research needs.

Students who voluntarily enter their USD email address with their completed survey will be eligible to WIN one of eight Coyote Cash Prizes (6 for $20, 1 for $30, and 1 for $50). Please do not complete the survey if you are not at least 18 years old.

To ensure anonymity, email addresses are separated from survey responses and drawing entries once the completed survey is submitted. The survey is open until Friday, November 9, 2018. If you have questions or problems accessing the survey, please contact Caroline Anderberg at libqual@usd.edu.

Silent Witness Initiative

The Department of Political Science is sponsoring Silent Witness Initiative in I.D. Weeks Library during Oct. 8 - 15. 

In 1990, the Silent Witness Initiative began promoting and education to support an end to domestic violence through community based exhibits.  It started with a small group of volunteers in one state and grew into an international presence, with projects in all 50 states and 23 countries.

Silent Witness provides hope, help and healing for the victims and violators of domestic violence. Our goal is to eliminate domestic violence homicides by 2020.

Thousands of men and women die each year in acts of domestic violence in the United States.  Each one has a story.  Join our efforts to end this tragedy.

What do you like about working for the library, what is interesting about your project/job? The things I like the most is the energy brought in by the people coming from diverse backgrounds and the type of work I do which involves web administration and other software related activities.

Graduate Assistant Profile - Sarah Hamner

Name: Sarah Hamner
Area of Study: Master of Public Administration

Library Department: Archives and Special Collections

Bio: I grew up in South Jersey, and got my undergraduate degree in Agricultural Leadership from SDSU. I worked for South Dakota 4-H for about six months before deciding to come back to school full time rather than online, and switching directions from agriculture to administration. This is my second year in the program. My bookshelves at home are overflowing, so in my spare time I try and get through the books I bought and haven't found time to read yet.  I'm also working on family history research for my own curiosity- leading to many of the unread books at home.

Library projects you are working on:
I'll be primarily working with government documents this semester, focusing on Jim Abourezk's papers. I don't know too much about South Dakota politics, being from so far away and then being so deeply involved in the 4-H and Ag world for my first four and a half years here. Working with these papers is already really interesting, and continuing with these is going to make for a great semester. Next semester will be a continuation of Abourezk, adding a project with a South Dakota writer from West River and her collection.

What do you like about working for the library, what is interesting about your project/job?
I'm really enjoying working here because I was split in my decision for a graduate degree when searching, one being PA and one being library sciences or archives, so it's great to see what kind of work I would have been exposed to had I taken the other route. It feels like I'm able to get a little bit of both things, so that's very satisfying. I'm also enjoying just looking for something in the stacks and being around all the older and rare things in the Archives.
