University Libraries hosts three print exhibits showcasing international artists this summer

VERMILLION, S.D. -- University Libraries at the University of South Dakota are hosting three print exhibitions in conjunction with Frogman’s 33rd Print Workshop now through Friday, Aug. 10.

The inaugural showing of the international traveling exhibit, “Dialogos y Interpretaciones,” is located on the first floor of the I.D. Weeks library building in the University Libraries Gallery. Co-curators, Jules Floss of the United States and Jorge Osorio of Columbia, have brought together more than 70 artists from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Honduras and the United States for an artistic and cultural exchange. Artists were given great latitude in their interpretation of the portfolio’s theme and every fine art print in the exchange features traditional printmaking techniques such as relief, lithography, intaglio, serigraphy and letterpress. “Intersecting Methods” is located in the second floor, west side gallery and brings together the arts and sciences to create collaborative prints by partnering printmakers with scientists, engineers and other related professionals. As a process for creating art, printmaking has many similarities to the scientific method. Printmakers dream up imagery, experiment with mediums, proof their plates, manipulate variables (one at a time), and proof again to be able to create the desired results for a final edition. Scientists, engineers, and others in related fields, work through similar steps in conducting experiments and attempting to prove or disprove a hypothesis. “The Hidden Room in the House: Printmakers and the Art of Sublimation” is located in the second floor glass cases. The idea of sublimation serves as a springboard for artists to explore the “fire and black material prima” from which their raw impulses are born and inform their artwork. “The Hidden Room in the House”, “Dialogos y Interpretacione”, and “Intersecting Methods” are free and open to the public. A reception for all three exhibitions will occur the night of Frogman’s Gallery “Crawl”, Saturday, July 5, from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. where works by more than 200 nationally and internationally-recognized artists will be featured.
