Cedric and Daisey Marks Collection

A few selections from the Cedric and Daisey Marks Collection of Pre-Columbian Art have been installed on the second floor of the library, west side, right across from the elevator entrance. This collection was donated to the University Art Galleries in 1992.  

New Resource - Libby by Overdrive

Libby is a reading app by OverDrive, which allows users to borrow eBooks and audiobooks from the library. In audio, we currently have a full run of Shakespeare and some titles from L.A. Theatre Works and a handful of English titles. We also have over 5,000 titles from 4 University Presses in eBook format which cover many disciplines. View/listen on your computer or use the Libby app to read/listen to subscribed content. loops, and shell scripting. If possible, please bring your own computer.

Bloomsbury Medieval Studies

E-Books and E-Texts, Images and Sound. Interdisciplinary collection on medieval studies combines primary sources and interdisciplinary scholarship from a global perspective. Contents include the Encyclopedia of the Global Middle Ages, digitized medieval maps from the British Library, manuscripts and incunabula, and over one thousand images of medieval objects from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Research and Learning section of the site offers lesson plans and subject guides to support medieval studies instruction.

University Libraries Presents 'Bound and Unbound VIII' Altered Book Exhibition
The University Libraries at the University of South Dakota is presenting its biennial international altered book exhibition “Bound and Unbound VIII,” juried by Bratislava, Slovakia-based altered book artist and illustrator, Isobelle Ouzman, now through Jan. 5, 2026.

The University Libraries at the University of South Dakota is presenting its biennial international altered book exhibition “Bound and Unbound VIII,” juried by Bratislava, Slovakia-based altered book artist and illustrator, Isobelle Ouzman, now through Jan. 5, 2026.

“Bound and Unbound VIII” is located in the exhibition cases on the second floor of the I.D. Weeks Library. It is open to the public for viewing during library operating hours, which can be found online. The exhibition can also be viewed online in the Digital Library of South Dakota.

The University Libraries Art and Exhibits Committee, sponsor of the exhibition, seeks to showcase a diverse range of international altered book art, to present the work locally and to build an online research collection of altered books.

“Altered books and book art continue to push the boundaries of what it means to tell a story and the ways we can give form to narrative,” said Ouzman. “Reviewing the submissions for “Bound and Unbound VIII” has been a beautiful reminder of this power, and the amount of entries received speaks to the impact of this growing art form.”

“‘Bound and Unbound VIII’ broke two new records in 2025,” said Sarah Hanson-Pareek, assistant librarian at USD. “We received the largest number of entries in the University Libraries’ altered book exhibition and had the greatest number of countries represented. Seventy-five artists entered the call for the exhibition with 124 works from 12 countries, 29 U.S. states and one U.S. territory.”

“Each submission was truly rich in creativity and imagination, making the selection process an inspiring yet challenging task,” said Ouzman. “The entries I chose for this exhibition stood out to me as pieces that explore the theme of storytelling and experimentation, as well as pieces that challenge the capabilities of books and paper as material. My own view on altered book art has been expanded through this experience, and I’m proud to see how far this type of work is reaching.”

“With altered books as narratives, Juror Isobelle Ouzman articulates an intriguing concept, which certainly resonates with me,” said Dan Daily, dean of the University Libraries. “I have viewed the pieces selected for past “Bound and Unbound” exhibits, and I have tried to contemplate what the artists aimed to communicate and what the altered books may communicate to the USD community. “Bound and Unbound VIII” will certainly bring forward new narratives to reflect upon.”

Ouzman’s work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Slovakia, featured in magazines such as Hi-Fructose, Colossal, and My Modern Met, and can be found in private collections worldwide. Her work can also be found on the covers of “Alice with a Why” by Anna James and “The Whisperwicks” series, published by Simon & Schuster. Ouzman selected 35 works from 31 artists, representing seven countries.

Alison Turner Joins University Libraries as New South Dakota Oral History Center Curator

We are thrilled to welcome Alison Turner, Ph.D., as the new Curator of the South Dakota Oral History Center. Turner brings an extraordinary range of experience in oral history, community-based storytelling and archival research. With a doctorate in English & Literary Arts from the University of Denver and an impressive record of projects like “Raising Children in Central Jackson Oral History Project” and the “Safe Outdoor Spaces Oral History Project.” Turner’s work emphasizes community engagement, inclusivity and preserving underrepresented voices. Her numerous peer-reviewed publications — including in “Oral History Review,” “American Archivist,” and “Archivaria” — along with her leadership in oral history initiatives, underscore her deep commitment to documenting lived experiences with care and authenticity.

Turner’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter for the South Dakota Oral History Center. Her passion for community-driven research and storytelling will build on the Center’s strong legacy while opening new avenues for collection, collaboration, scholarship and public engagement. Changes to IPA Source effective June 1, 2025

Effective June 1, IPA Source has upgraded the text viewer. All texts will be accessible via a convenient "View Full Text" button, which will open the text in a new window/tab. This change also offers an improved experience for those accessing IPA Source from a mobile device.

As of this update, the ability to download individual files as PDFs will be discontinued, but printing files is permitted to any printing option supported by the user’s device (including print to PDF file if enabled). All files are for the personal use of the authorized user.

Faculty may continue to refer to the same text links. Permalinks continue to be available for each text in our catalog.

Holocaust Memorial Museum Launch New Landmark Initiative

 

Project MUSE and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Launch New Landmark Initiative   Now available as an Open Access Digital Resource

 

(Washington, DC & Baltimore, MD) – Project MUSE, a division of Johns Hopkins University Press, in collaboration with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, announces today a new landmark in the Museum’s longstanding Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933–1945 (ECG) series: ECG volumes I-IV are now fully searchable, open access digital publications freely available to everyone around the world. The most comprehensive resource on Nazi persecutory sites, the ECG offers users the ability to dynamically engage with empirically grounded research that documents thousands of camps, ghettos, and other sites of persecution operated by the Nazis and their allies.  Work on the multi-volume encyclopedia stretches back over twenty-five years and involves the work of over 700 scholars in the fields of history, Holocaust Studies, and other related disciplines. To date, this global scholarly collaboration has documented evidence of thousands of camps and ghettos. Project MUSE and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum are committed to broadening access to and increasing engagement with this vital scholarship. This new digital format will be an invaluable resource for wide-ranging audiences, including scholars, researchers, Holocaust survivors and their descendants, digital humanists, educators, students, librarians, archivists, nonprofits, and the general public. Users will gain straightforward access to extensive bibliographic citations comprising research in more than a dozen languages and varied source bases, including material in hundreds of archival collections, survivor and eyewitness testimonies, memoirs, diaries, memory books, and up-to-date scholarship. Users can navigate to the text of the ECG through a new interactive map that demonstrates the vast scale of this network of Nazi-era persecution. “The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has been working on this foundational encyclopedia for decades. The move to open access will ensure that this resource reaches scholars, researchers, and wider audiences wherever they are, thereby bringing new people into the conversation about the topic,” said Dr. Lisa Leff, Director of the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.   The first four volumes of this seven-volume collection will be available in the new fully searchable, digital format beginning May 8th. Content in the remaining three volumes will be published online as it is available. In addition to the remaining volumes, newly updated content that incorporates previously inaccessible and undiscovered sources will continuously be added to the ECG.
