An overview of recent trends in scholarly communications with an emphasis on how faculty and graduate students can both protect their intellectual property and promote open access to research and creative works. Case studies will provide a basis for discussion and learning.

Bound and Unbound IV
The Libraries’ biennial international altered book
exhibition “Bound and Unbound IV,” juried by Eli Show, an artist, musician,
from Sioux Falls, is on display in the 2nd floor display cases
of the library now through January 3, 2018.

From DNA to Beer: Harnessing Nature in Medicine and Industry

The National Library of Medicine, in cooperation with the National Museum of American History, is pleased to present our latest traveling exhibition, From DNA to Beer: Harnessing Nature in Medicine & History. Microbes—tiny organisms too small to be seen with the naked eye—have altered human history. Life forms such as bacteria, yeasts, and molds can cause sickness or restore health, and help produce foods and beverages for our consumption. Drawing from the collections of the National Museum of American History and the National Library of Medicine, From DNA to Beer will help to promote public understanding of the dynamic relationship between microbes, technology, and science and medicine.

University Libraries implement new discovery system
Supporting USD's commitment to innovation and
accessibility, the new system will enable the University Libraries to
continuously refresh and unveil new digital tools that will allow students and
faculty to search, browse, share and customize materials in increasingly robust
and intuitive ways.
Additionally, the platform will support broader
integration of information resources through its alignment with all the SD BOR
libraries, to ensure greater fiscal responsibility and operational efficiency.
The new system is cloud based, with improved
discovery, analytics, and other capabilities as well as simplified and more
efficient staff workflows. With the new system we can replace the 4-6 different
systems (from different vendors) that are not integrated, with integrated
modules that meet the functional needs of the University Libraries.
Look for the change to be in effect in August. The
main search/discovery search interface will be available at usd.edu/library

will this mean for me?
The interface for locating, accessing and obtaining USD Library resources will change in August. Many new features will be available which will allow for better virtual browsing of USD Library's collections and improved integration with other various University systems, including the learning management system (D2L).

Changes to State Library Databases
The subscriptions to the databases ProQuest Statistical Insight and ProQuest Congressional will cease on July 1.
The databases have been provided to USD by the South Dakota State Library. The cancellation was a state library decision and not an action taken by USD. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the South Dakota State Library.

ProQuest Databases down
Update - databases are now operational.
The ProQuest suite of databases provided by the State Library are having connectivity issues- AncestryLibrary, HeritageQuest, ProQuest Discovery and Research Library, SIRS Discoverer and Researcher, and US Major Dailies. ProQuest is aware of the problem and is working on it.

July 12 Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality

The Federal Communications Commission has opened a public proceeding to roll back network neutrality protections instituted in 2015. Net neutrality is the principle that internet service providers (ISPs) must enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source and without favoring or blocking specific services or websites.
The ALA has been on the front lines of the net neutrality battle with the FCC, Congress and the federal courts for more than a decade, working in coalition with other library and higher education organizations as well as broader coalitions of net neutrality advocates.
The ALA is one of nearly 200 organizations participating in the July 12 Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality.
On July 12, websites, internet users and online communities will come together to sound the alarm about the FCC’s attack on net neutrality. Absent strong, enforceable net neutrality protections, ISPs have the financial incentive and opportunity to sell priority access to certain content providers. Enforceable rules are essential for libraries to fulfill our missions and serve our patrons. Tell the FCC to Save Net Neutrality.

Parking Lot Re-striping - Starting June 26
The Library parking lot (lot 2) will be closed June 26-30 due to re-striping parking spots.
Other lots that will be painted during this week will be: lots 1, 2, 6, 6A, 7, 8, Handicap area north of McKusick Hall in lot 9, 11, 19, 26, 27, and west half of 31.
These parking lots will be barricaded off starting at 6:00 am on Monday June 26th, 2017

Temporary Water Shut Off
DATE: Friday, June 23rd, 2017
TIME: 1:00PM – 2:00PM
Facilities Management will be replacing water shutoff valves in the third floor restrooms. To do this water will have to be shut off to the building. All water use fixtures will be inoperable during this time. This includes, but is not limited to: urinals, toilets, sinks, and drinking fountains.

Arthur Amiotte
The John Day collection on Arthur Amiotte (MS 046) is now open to researchers.
The majority of this collection was gathered by John Day before, during, and after the retrospective on Arthur Amiotte’s art in 2001. Also included are VHS recordings featuring Amiotte.
The 4.5 linear feet of material span the years 1962-2010, with the bulk from of the material dated 1980-2003.
Contact the Archives and Special Collections for a copy of the guide to the collection.

3rd Floor Update!
The 3rd floor of the I.D. Weeks library
building is now open. Please pardon our mess though!
Extensive shifting of the book collection on the east side of the 3rd floor will continue throughout the summer AND that means it will be a little noisier on 3rd than usual. If you have trouble finding an item during the shift, please inquire at the Circulation desk.
